Education
The Rural Education Project is aimed at developing the literacy and numeracy skills of primary school learners in under-resourced rural schools. Project Leader, Cally Kuhne of the University of Cape Town’s Schools Development Unit outlines the project as follows, “This exciting 4 year (2006 to 2009) education and development project aims to offer numeracy and literacy interventions in 38 rural schools from Vredendal, Caledon, Villiersdorp, George and Mossel Bay. The interventions are aimed at supporting curriculum advisors, teachers and principals with improving learner performance and teaching practices”.
In addition to funding of R1 million rand over 4 years to REP, The Foschini Group awards Jungle Gyms to the schools that show the best improvement in their literacy and numeracy levels.
